NYUNGWE
FOREST

The Nyungwe forest lies between Butare and Lake Kivu. It is one of the largest mountain forests in Africa. In addition to the evergreen forest, mountain rivers and waterfalls run through the area. Hundreds of tree and plant species make the forest unique. The highlight of the park are the 13 different species of monkeys that can be found here.

Three volcanoes seen from Rwanda in the border area with the Democratic Republic of Congo: mounts Karisimbi, Bisoke & Mikeno (from left to right).

MOUNT
KARISIMBI

The Karisimbi is a dormant volcano in the Virunga volcanic chain and the highest point in Rwanda. At 4507 m, the Karisimbi is the highest of the eight peaks in the mountain range that is part of the East African Rift Valley. The name Karisimbi probably comes from the word isimbi, which means “little white shell” in Kinyarwanda.

Kataza House | Kwitonda Lodge

The Singita Kwitonda Lodge and the exclusively used Kataza House are located on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, where more than a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas live in high-altitude cloud forests. They are the perfect starting point for extraordinary gorilla treks that you will never forget. The lodge and the villa are the only places in close proximity to the natural habitat of the "gentle giants of the forest". The park headquarters where the safaris begin is less than 10 minutes away.
